A Man Who Lived the Cycle — and Chose to Break It
My name is Joe Nehls.
I survived emotional incest, deep childhood trauma, and years of silence.
I later became a sex offender — and the cycle continued.
Until it didn’t.

For more than 15 years, I’ve:
- Worked through recovery, faith, grief, and accountability
- Had hundreds of conversations with other offenders
- Seen the same patterns repeating like a family curse
- Spent my life documenting the cycle so others don’t repeat it
- Built SOAR as a platform for healing, truth, and prevention
- Started the MotherMade project to break generational silence
- Begun producing the documentary The Making and Unmaking of a Sex Offender
My story is not an excuse.
It’s a map.
About SOAR & Our Books
All SOAR books are free.
If you want a copy, send us your email and we’ll send you a download link—no cost, no catch.
You’ll also see our books listed on Amazon. That’s not because this is a business. It’s because Amazon allows us to purchase and ship physical books directly into prisons.
Any money from book sales goes right back into buying more books for incarcerated men who don’t have access to free downloads.
This is a ministry, not a business.
The mission is simple: reduce harm, increase accountability, and bring peace where it’s been missing.
A man at peace harms no one.
Frequently Asked Questions
Are the books really free?
Yes. Every SOAR book is available at no cost. Email us and we’ll send you a download link.
Then why are the books on Amazon?
Because prisons do not accept emailed files. Amazon enables direct shipment of physical books into correctional facilities.
Are you making money from book sales?
No. Any money generated is used solely to purchase and distribute more books to inmates.
Is SOAR a nonprofit or a business?
SOAR is a ministry. There are no salaries, grants, or revenue streams tied to this work.
Why focus on incarcerated and registered men?
Because accountability and healing reduce future harm. Ignoring people after conviction does not make communities safer—doing the hard work does.
What is the goal of SOAR?
To interrupt cycles of harm by addressing root causes, increasing accountability, and supporting lasting internal change.
Why should I trust this?
You don’t have to. The books are free. Read them and judge the work by its honesty and restraint.
